Northumberland Hills Public School in Castleton Taking Conservative Approach Following Case of COVID-19
The principal of Northumberland Hills Public School in Castleton sent a e-mail to parents, guardians and staff of the school regarding a confirmed case of COVID-19 at the school.
Principal Stephen Koshurba said the school is taking a more “conservative approach for contact management” by switching the school to close the school for in-person learning effective immediately and switching to virtual learning for the rest of the week.
Update: The HKPR District Health Unit would not state if the individual was a student or staff member
Following is the letter from the principal:
Dear Parents, Guardians and Staff,
The Haliburton Kawartha Pine Ridge District Health Unit (HKPRDHU) has notified us of a case of COVID-19 at our school.
The identity of the individual is protected by privacy legislation and will not be shared.
We wish them a full and speedy recovery.
Evolving considerations related to the new COVID-19 variant of concern have prompted a more conservative approach for contact management.
Out of an abundance of caution, the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board has made the decision, in consultation with HKPRDHU, to close the school to in-person learning effective immediately.
All students will transition to virtual learning for the rest of the week.
Classroom teachers will contact families with further directions. On behalf of HKPRDHU, we have notified all identified close contacts with a separate notice to advise them of next steps.
HKPRDHU is recommending that all staff and students with possible COVID-19 symptoms get tested to identify any additional cases in the school.

If symptoms develop, self-isolate and get tested as soon as possible.
COVID-19 symptoms include fever (temperature of 37.8 degrees Celsius or greater), chills, new or worsening cough, shortness of breath, changes to taste or smell.
Children under 18 may also experience nausea, vomiting, and/or diarrhea.
Adults over 18 may experience symptoms of fatigue (generally feeling unwell or tired), or muscle aches and pain.
