As a family tries to cope with the unimaginable sudden loss, police spent most of Thursday trying to find answers that would lead them to a cause of a deadly collision in Port Hope on Wednesday, August 4, 2021.
Emergency services were called at approximately 10:58 p.m. on Wednesday evening to attend the scene of a single motor vehicle collision on Sylvan Glen Road, just north of County Road 74 (Dale Road) in the municipality of Port Hope.
Today’s Northumberland has learned a man with blood on his face walked south from the collision scene to a nearby house to report the collision.
A short time later emergency services arrived.
Tragically, Serena Shaw (age 23) of Hamilton Township, a passenger in the vehicle, was pronounced deceased.
The driver was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
On Thursday, members of the OPP Technical Collision Investigators examined the scene along with the vehicle – a 1971 pickup truck.
A long line of tire marks on the road appear to indicate the pick-up started from a stop at County Road 74 (Dale Road) and continued north eventually appearing to lose control and enter the ditch on the west side of the road where the collision happened.
OPP are also looking into an incident just prior to the collision of a report of a vehicle doing circles (donuts) at the intersection of County Road 10, County Road 2, and County Road 74 at Welcome.
The skid marks indicate a vehicle did at least three complete 360 degree turns before leaving the area.
One witness told Today’s Northumberland when she looked out the window at approximately 10:45 p.m. she could barely make out the flashing stop lights because of the thick smoke.
OPP are looking for any witnesses to either incident to call Northumberland OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
