A fire at the Port Hope Town Hall could have been much worse had the fire not burned itself out.
On Saturday, July 24, 2021 at approximately 5:30 p.m. Port Hope Fire and Emergency Services responded to the town hall on Queen Street for an automatic alarm
Upon arrival firefighters noticed a haze in the historic building and could smell smoke.
Immediately fire crews dispatched an “all call” for all stations to respond.
Firefighters scoured the building to look for any cause of the smoke and determined a coffee maker had possibly shorted out in the basement creating a small fire that burned itself out.
Deputy Fire Chief Jeff Ogden said the monitoring system reacted quickly notifying the fire department.
“Thankfully the fire burned itself out, but it’s a reminder to everyone to always unplug appliances when you are not using them for a period of time.”
There was no damaged to the building or contents (other than the coffee maker).
