A joint effort of emergency services rescued a person in distress on Lake Ontario off Cobourg on Saturday, July 24, 2021.
At approximately 10:40 p.m. emergency services including Cobourg Police, Cobourg Fire Department and Northumberland County Paramedics were notified of a person in distress on the west side of the west break wall of Cobourg Harbour.
Cobourg Police arrived first on scene and could hear the person screaming in distress in the lake approximately 200 feet from the shoreline.
While two officers stayed in contact with the person, another officer with lights and sirens activated quickly went to the Coast Guard station at the bottom of Division Street and alerted members of the Coast Guard station.
Using a quick rescue craft members of the Coast Guard along with a police officer quickly went to the area outside the harbour and spotted the person in the lake.
The person was rescued, taken back to the Coast Guard pier and quickly placed in an ambulance and taken to the hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
After the rescue police and Coast Guard members “fist-bumped” on a job well done in saving a life.
