Community Comes Through for Curbside Collection for Wesleyville Church Restoration

The community of Port Hope came through once again for a curbside collection for the Wesleyville Church that was damaged by fire.

Approximately $100,000 damage was done to the Wesleyville Church on April 3, 2021 after suspect/s set the front entrance of the church on fire.

Port Hope Fire and Emergency Services were dispatched at approximately 5:40 a.m. to the church on Lakeshore Road.

When they arrived the front of the church was engulfed in flames.

Firefighters managed to extinguish the fire before it consumed the church.

Insurance didn’t cover the damage, so fundraising efforts are well underway to restore the church.

Councillors Jeff Lees and Wendy Meadows held curbside collection in front of Lees home on Hope Street North on Saturday, July 3, 2021 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

For a minimum $2 donation people would receive a carnation.

Lees and Meadows spent their own money to purchase the 150 carnations from St. Lawrence Flowers at cost for the fundraiser.

Lees said at the end of the day he and Meadows were thrilled that $720 were donated by the community towards the restoration of the church.

Approximately $50,000 has been raised to date for the restoration of the church.
