A 55-year-old Cobourg man was pronounced deceased at the scene of a motorcycle collision in Hamilton Township on Saturday, June 5, 2021.
Emergency services were called to the area of Harwood Road, just north of Pollack Road at approximately 8:22 a.m. after a passerby noticed the wreckage.
The lone occupant of the motorcycle was travelling north on Harwood Road when the motorcycle left the roadway on a bend, went into the ditch before striking a driveway culvert.
The driver was ejected from the motorcycle as it continued in the ditch and over a second driveway culvert.
Harwood Road in the area was closed while members of the OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigators examined the scene.
Northumberland OPP are unsure at what time the collision happened and if anyone has any information to call Northumberland OPP.
While police were investigating the scene with the road closed off, at approximately 12:30 p.m. a 65-year-old man drove up in a side-by-side with his dog.
A short time later a 75-year-old man was arrested and charged with impaired driving.

Update – Northumberland OPP
(NORTHUMBERLAND, ON) – On June 5th 2021, at 08:19 a.m., members from the Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received information from a motorist who had come across the scene of a collision on Harwood road between Pollock Rd and Daignault Rd, involving a motorcycle.
Police attended the scene and located the motorcycle and the driver in the northbound ditch along the roadway.
John MERRETT (age 55) of Cobourg was pronounced deceased at the scene. A post mortem examination will be conducted on Monday, June 7th 2021 at the Ontario Coroner’s Office in Kingston.
Members of the OPP Technical Collision Investigation (TCI) have conducted their preliminary investigation into the cause of the collision.
