Fresh Paint for Rainbow Crosswalk in Cobourg Celebrating Pride Month

Rainbow Sidwalk Cobourg May 27, 2021

Town of Cobourg Public Works Department painted the Rainbow Crosswalk on Second Street beside Victoria Hall on Thursday, May 27, 2021.

The Rainbow Crosswalk was first unveiled on June 3, 2019 which coincides with Pride Month in Canada from June 1 to June 29.

Pride Month is an annual gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered and queer communities.
LGBT Pride celebration held each year where various events are held across Canada.

Chapter Leader of PFLAG Cobourg/Port Hope Chapter, Ashley Bouman said, “I was delighted to see that the Rainbow Crosswalk is being repainted for this year’s Pride month. That crosswalk is symbolic of Cobourg’s commitment to the promotion of queer representation in rural communities, which is of the utmost importance as it would be wonderful to see this message of recognition and acceptance spread throughout Northumberland municipalities. The rainbow is an important symbol of the queer community and is used quite frequently at Pride events signifying LGBTQIA+ activism and inclusivity.”

Bouman adds that she would like to see more communities in Northumberland recognize Pride Month.

“So that one day we can all celebrate Northumberland Pride together but for now, let’s get a cheer for small town Pride!”

VIRTUAL PRIDE ACTIVITY/Community Pride Challenge:

Due to COVID19 restrictions Pride celebrations will continue to be virtual this year, however, with the newly painted, vibrant crosswalk, one virtual Pride event can be taking a photo at the crosswalk!
