Fern Blodgett Sunde Vandalism Cobourg May 20, 2021

Cobourg Police are investigating after the base of a statue honouring a Cobourg trailblazer was damaged by vandals.
The statue honouring Cobourg born Fern Blodgett Sunde was unveiled on October 17, 2020, but sometime overnight on Wednesday May 19, 2021 or early Thursday morning the base of the statue was spray-painted.

Blodgett Sunde grew up in Cobourg and became a radio operator in the navy in 1941 becoming the first Canadian woman to earn a Second Class Wireless Operator’s certificate.

Blodgett Sunde made 78 transatlantic crossings during the Battle of the Atlantic.

Though the monument is honouring Cobourg’s own, it id dedicated to all Canadians who served at sea during the Battle of the Atlantic, especially those who paid freedom’s highest price.

Anyone with any information is asked to call Cobourg Police or Crimestoppers.
