Trading Tickets for Timmies at Anti-Lockdown Protest in Cobourg
Another anti-lockdown protest was held in front of Victoria Hall in Cobourg on Saturday, May 15, 2021.
Special Constables didn’t issue anyone $880.00 tickets under the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act handed out during the three hour protest that takes place each Saturday from noon until 3 p.m.
But the officers asked approximately five protestors if they wanted a coffee from Tim Hortons.
“Today the policeman came over and ask me if I wanted a coffee,” said one protestor speaking to Today’s Northumberland.
“He bought me a coffee which was very nice. It’s a lot better than a $880.00 ticket.”
In the last month the protestor has received two tickets for $880.00 under the EMCPA.
The protestor said he wasn’t surprised because these are confusing times.
“The officers have been nice all day and even when they are giving us tickets they are nice to us.”
With record numbers of people at the Cobourg Farmer’s Market and a block away protestors regularly receive tickets, the protestor said, “It just doesn’t make any sense to have that many people down there, all close together and just for five of us here – it’s like everything else, it’s backwards, upside down, inside out – it doesn’t make any sense.”
There were mainly three protestors in front of Victoria Hall throughout the three hours, but sometimes the number was approximately seven.
As with other weeks, vehicles in support honked their horns as they went by, while others who don’t support the group raised a finger.
Another site that seems to be not uncommon to see are vehicles travelling the wrong way on Second Street.
“It’s a nice day for once. We are just enjoying the comradery,” said the protestor.
“We like to get together and socialize. We’re not hurting anybody and we’re enjoying our coffee.”
As the clock rang three o’clock the protestors grabbed their signs, exchanged pleasantries with each other and the police and walked away – until next Saturday.
