Representatives from the Province of Ontario including MPP David Piccini and Solicitor General Sylvia Jones honoured retiring Port Hope Deputy Police Chief Darren Strongman on Friday, November 27, 2020 at the Port Hope Police Station.

Strongman has been a police officer for 34-years and announced his retirement in October after spending 34-years in policing.

During his 31-year career with Port Hope Police Service, Strongman rose through the ranks becoming a Sergeant, then was appointed Inspector in 2015 and Deputy Chief in 2016.

On Friday, Piccini recalled growing up in public school when he first introduced to Strongman who taught about safety.

“It was about community based policing and about understanding the role our police play in our community.”

Since becoming the MPP for Northumberland-Peterborough South, Piccini has had the chance to do a ride-along with officers and learned about policing first hand.

Piccini said Strongman has been the face of community policing in the community.

The Solicitor General said, “when community policing is done right, it makes such a difference in the community.”

“It’s not just about boots on the ground, it’s not about CCTV, it’s not about the latest technology, it’s about committed individuals who want to serve their community – so, thank you.”

Strongman said he’s always appreciated the support from the Province when it comes to policing.

“When we’ve met on topics certainly yourselves and the Premier have always been open on topics and that’s great because it’s good for the front line (officers) to know that they are being supported by their government.”

“When you’re boots on the ground, that’s probably when I had the most fun. Meeting the community and solving problems.”

Calling his retirement “bittersweet,” Strongman thanked the Chief, administration and staff along with his wife for the support over his years of service.

Strongman was given a Order of Rank from Premier Ford and a certificate from the Solicitor General.

Strongman retires from policing on December 21, 2020.
