High Winds Northumberland County November 15, 2020

High winds created havoc throughout Northumberland County on Sunday, November 15, 2020.

Northumberland OPP were extremely busy and by the time the busiest part of the evening wound down every fire department in Northumberland County were called into action.

The first call for emergency services came in just after 4 p.m. to a motor vehicle collision on Bob Carr Road, just south of County Road 2 in Hamilton Township west of Cobourg.

A couple were heading home turned onto Bob Carr Road to turn around when a large tree suddenly and without warning fell onto the vehicle briefly trapping the two occupants.

Both people climbed out the drivers door and were checked over by Northumberland County Paramedics before being released.

Both were shaken, but uninjured.

At nearly the same time a family became trapped in their vehicle after numerous power lines and hydro poles fell near them as they were travelling westbound on Dale Road just west of Garland Road in Hamilton Township.

It appears the driver may have saw the poles toppling on the south side of the roadway and headed for the safety of the north ditch.

Firefighters carefully escorted the family which included small children away from the scene. The vehicle was left at the scene until the hydro poles/wires could be removed.

Ontario Street south of Dale Road was also closed because of trees blocking the roadway.

Hydro was out in various parts of Northumberland County including a large section of Hamilton Township. It’s unknown when it will be fully restored.  Road crews in Hamilton Township and other areas worked through the night trying to clear downed trees from roadways.

Damage to property won’t likely be fully known until Monday morning.

Visually, there were numerous trees uprooted throughout the County, shingles off roofs, antennas collapsed, numerous barns received damage and at least one vehicle was destroyed when a tree fell on it.

Numerous people sent Today’s Northumberland images of what they captured. If anyone has photos please send to editor@todaysnorthumberland.ca
