MPP Piccini Announces Over $1.5 Million for Local Transit

Ontario is working to support municipalities and get people moving by investing in new transit infrastructure projects in the Town of Cobourg and Municipality of Port Hope.
On September 18, 2020, MPP David Piccini announced that the Government of Ontario is investing over $501,000 in transit infrastructure projects by nominating them under the Public Transit stream of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP).

“The investments we are announcing today include projects that will improve capacity, quality and accessibility of the transit systems in these communities,” said MPP Piccini. “Overall, our
investment will help enhance the transit system’s efficiency and provide for a better customer experience.”

The projects are now approved by all levels of government for final funding under the ICIP program.

“After careful review of project applications last spring, our government nominated these projects to the federal government under the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program,” said
MPP Piccini. “I am thrilled these projects have received final federal approval. We are doing everything we can to get shovel-ready infrastructure under way to support economic recovery
and job creation post COVID-19. We’re working to deliver on these projects as quickly and efficiently as possible.”

QUICK FACTS
These projects include:

Cobourg – replacement of rolling stock (three buses).

Project details – purchase of three new buses (two conventional 30-foot transit buses and one 8-metre, low floor specialized vehicle) to replace aging vehicles in the fleet will improve the town’s transit system by making all buses fully accessible.

Federal Funding – $496,182

Provincial Funding – $413,433

Municipal Funding – $330,829

 

Port Hope – Specialized Transit Service Expanding and Accessibility Improvements to Existing Stops

Project details – The procurement of a new specialized transit vehicle will expand services to rural areas, while the installation of new bus shelters, benches, concrete pads, and sidewalk approaches will improve the quality, safety and accessibility of the transit system.

Federal Funding – $105,800

Provincial – $88,158

Municipal – $70,542

· The Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program is federal-provincial cost-sharing program which includes up to $30 billion in federal, provincial and other partner funding over 10 years. Ontario’s share per project will be up to 33.33 per cent or about $10.2 billion spread across four streams: 1. Rural and Northern, 2. Public Transit, 3. Green, 4. Community, Culture and Recreation.

· On July 22, 2019, Ontario announced that until October 24, municipalities inside the GTHA can apply for funding to support new transit projects under the Public Transit Stream of the
Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program. Information on additional intakes will be released when available.
