“Down Home Diplomacy” Helped Remove Hangman
Hamilton Township Mayor Bill Cane said it was “down home diplomacy” that helped removed a hangman from the roadway on Friday, June 26, 2020.
The metal statue which is also a mailbox was in place on Hamilton Road for approximately 25-years the owner told Today’s Northumberland on Friday.
A social media post was shared hundreds of times on Thursday raising concerns about artwork.
“We tried a couple of times before to have this removed by going through proper channels, that being Canada Post, since the structure was actually a mailbox but were unsuccessful.”
Cane said “down home diplomacy” worked after Deputy Mayor Scott Jibb spoke directly to the owner and he agreed to take it down.
“I don’t believe he intended this to be offensive but when Scott explained the connotations he agreed to let us remove it.”
The owner told Today’s Northumberland the meaning behind the artwork is personal but has nothing to do with colour.
