A garage was consumed by fire in Port Hope on Sunday, May 24, 2020.

Members of the Port Hope Fire Department were notified shortly before 5 p.m. at 66 Toronto Road, just north of Hillcrest Drive.

When fire crews arrived on scene, the steel framed garage was engulfed in flames.

Owners of the home, Claude and Wendy Giroux had a number of family members home after attending a drive-by parade.

Their daughter Amy was in the backyard with her fiancé Cory Brooks and Amy’s nephew Kallum when they saw smoke coming from the garage.

“She saw the smoke and seconds later saw flames and yelled fire,” and Brooks called 9-1-1 immediately.

Brooks had the presence of mind to move all the vehicles away from the garage and to close all the windows inside the residence to prevent the smoke from coming inside.

Firefighters were on scene quickly but the fire was to well involved to save the structure.

There was also damage to the vinyl siding of the house from the radiant heat from the fire.

No word on cause or damage estimate.
