Port Hope Welcomes New Deputy Fire Chief

The Municipality of Port Hope has announced that, effective April 6, Daniel Smith has joined its Fire and Emergency Services as Deputy Fire Chief.

Mayor Bob Sanderson said in the announcement that he is pleased to welcome the new Deputy Chief.

“We look forward to the contributions he will bring to serve the citizens of the Municipality and the members of Port Hope Fire and Emergency Services,” Sanderson stated.

Now in his 20th year of service, Deputy Fire Chief Smith is dedicated to life-long learnig. He is a certified Fire Officer and holds a Diploma in Fire Protection Engineering, an Executive Diploma in Municipal Management, as well as certifications in fire service leadership, fire service administration and fire and explosive investigation. He is also presently completing his Bachelor of Emergency Management through Cape Breton University.

“We are excited to have Deputy Chief Smith join our team of dedicated members, especially at a time like this in our world history,” Fire Chief C. Ryan Edgar, Director of Fire and Emergency Services, commented.

“Daniel has a stellar reputation and brings the skills, talents, and leadership needed to continue to advance PHFES into the future. I am confident that his experience and knowledge in the fire service will be a great addition to both our family and to our community partners.”

Deputy Smith has been tasked to assist Edgar with the leadership, supervision and administration of more than 70 dedicated members, as well as assuming responsibility for the operational divisions of the department.

“I am extremely excited to join Chief Edgar in leading such a professional organization that is known to provide and exceptional public safety service,” Smith said in the press release.

“I am looking forward to becoming acquainted with the staff and becoming a part of the community.”

For the time being, Deputy Chief Smith (like all municipal administrative staff) is socially distancing and working from home due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He will return to the Fire Administration Office at 245 Ontario St. once regular operations resume.
