First VIA Train In Nearly A Month Arrives In Cobourg

For the first time in nearly a month a VIA train pulled into the Cobourg train station on Tuesday, March 3, 2020.

The eastbound train was headed for Ottawa, Kingston, Brockville and other destinations was approximately 15-minutes late but that didn’t bother Martha Baldwin from Cobourg.

Baldwin and her husband along with two other friends have been planning a trip to Montreal since before Christmas.

CN Rail service was shut down on February 6 due to a protest in Tyendinaga.

Tuesdays, VIA train was the first one in 25 days to arrive in Cobourg.

But Baldwin said, they’ve packed a number of items including magazines, lunch, computer just in case there are delays along the route.

“We’re ready,” said Baldwin.

Baldwin and her husband reside in Cobourg, but commute to Toronto by train so the stoppage definitely had an impact.

“It’s been a long four weeks.”

“We’ve been going to Oshawa, obviously car pooling with other commuters. With winter weather for a few days we drove into Newcastle and took the bus into Oshawa.”

“This is very much a happy occasion.”

Baldwin said she wouldn’t have been surprised if there was a band or balloons welcoming back the service.
