Workers from Brinkman Reforestation were busy over the last few days planting trees in Cobourg as part of the Highway of Heroes Living Tree Campaign.
Nearly 1,500 trees were being planted on the north and south sides of Highway 401 at County Road 45.
There were 1,000 trees planted on the south side and 340 on the north side of the Highway of Heroes.
Types including silver maple, red maple, white cedar, and service berry to name a few.
In 2014 worked to transform the Highway of Heroes into a living tribute that honours Canada’s war dead – 117,000 since Confederation. In addition to honouring our troops the commemorative trees would clean the atmosphere, cool the environment and provide an inspired drive down an otherwise pedestrian stretch of asphalt. The Highway of Heroes Tree Campaign was developed to make this a reality.
A total of 117,000 trees will be planted in honour of those who lost their lives along the Highway of Heroes and in addition, 1,883,000 trees (or 94% of the total number of trees) will be planted within 15 kilometres of the highway to recognize all Canadians who have served during times of war.
