Smoke Coming From Boat Causes Emergency At Cobourg Marina

Emergency services were dispatched to a boat on fire near the Cobourg Marina on Sunday, June 30, 2019.

Cobourg Fire Services received the call at approximately 1:45 p.m. for a boat on fire and one person injured.

Cobourg Marina Assistant Manager Julie Behan-Jones said there was visible smoke coming from the small cabin cruiser just inside the harbour.

“The engine overheated and failed and some of the lubricants were burning.”

Marina staff were alerted from another boater of the potential fire because of the smoke coming from the boat.

“The boat had no control and was veering into another (docked) boat,” said Behan-Jones.

Boaters ran to assist and try to help prevent it from hitting the other boat.

The owner’s wife who was on board the boat went to the bow to try to cushion the impact with the other boat but fell and sustained a serious injury.

Cobourg Police, Cobourg Fire Department, Northumberland Paramedics and the Canadian Coast Guard attended the scene.

Behan-Jones commended both marina staff and people who helped to assist in the emergency.
