Breaking News – UPDATE – Lockdown At St. Mary School In Cobourg After Threats – Youth Charged

UPDATE – A youth has been arrested and charged with Uttering Threats, section 264.1(1) of the Criminal Code. Under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, the youth’s name will not be released. A court date is pending.

St. Mary Secondary School in Cobourg was in lockdown on Monday, June 3, 2019 after threats were issued at the school.

Today’s Northumberland was notified by concerns parents and attended the school shortly after the incident was reported at 8:46 a.m.

There were four police cruisers parked outside the school, though it’s unknown how many officers were inside.

Reports from students in the school said the lights were turned off in the classrooms and officers entered the room using flashlights.

The students were told to sit on the floor behind the teachers desk and stay quiet.  They were out of sight from the windows and doors.

Grace Hie posted on Today’s Northumberland Facebook, “I have friends inside the school and some little punk posted on Snapchat that it was a possible shooter. Scaring everyone inside and myself. From what I heard student was arrested.”

Some parents waited outside for any word on their children.

At 10:46 a.m. Cobourg Police released a press release stating the following.

Threats Issued At Local High School
At about 08:46 AM on June 3, officers of the Cobourg Police Service were dispatched to a local high school in relation to threats made in relation to a firearm. The threats were made over a social media application.
While the individual making the threats was not present, a lockdown of the school was initiated, to further ensure student, teacher and public safety.
Investigation resulted in determining that the individual in question was residing outside of Cobourg. Officers from the Ontario Provincial Police were notified, and currently have the individual safely detained for further investigation.
With the wide availability of social media channels to students at the school in question, it is understood that parents have been advised by their children of the lockdown, and are justifiably concerned about their safety, as well as next steps.
The Cobourg Police Service are satisfied that there is no further threat to public safety at this time and will provide further information as it is available.

The release doesn’t say what time the lockdown was lifted.
