Brighton’s Battle To Protect The Shoreline
Brighton firefighters are doing their best to keep Lake Ontario from homes on Thursday, May 23, 2019.
Brighton Fire Chief Rick Caddick said they’ve done the best they can to protect properties along the lakeshore and Gosport areas.
Firefighters check routinely to see how the sand bag berms are holding out. They also monitor the water pumps to see they are topped up with fuel.
It’s an ongoing battle to try and keep the water at bay.
Fire crews are managing to hang-on, but if the water gets much higher, things could change.
The weather could also play a factor if winds pick up, then the surge of water could have a detrimental effect.
In some areas, water surrounds homes near the lakeshore. At Presqu’ile Provincial Park, the boardwalk is closed until the water recedes and the park just about resembles a giant swamp with water near roads of many streets.
