Hundreds of Atlantic Salmon Released Into Lake Ontario At Cobourg
Hundreds of adult Atlantic salmon from the Harwood Fish Culture Station on Tuesday, April 30, 2019 along the west pier in Cobourg.
The fish were transported down by two trucks, then tagged and placed into the water.
Colin Lake who is a Lead Planning Biologist with Lake Ontario Management Unit which is part of Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry said the fish were brood stock which were kept in a hatchery to produce other Atlantic salmon.
But after approximately five years the fish have completed their reproductive lives, the fish were “retired” to Lake Ontario.
“Hopefully some anglers will enjoy them,” said Lake.
A tag was placed on most of the fish and if an angler catches the fish they can give the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry a call.
“We’ll learn a bit more about how they survive in the lake and where they go.”
Over the course of the years the fish have been at the Harwood Fish Culture Station they have produced thousands of Atlantic salmon.
Approximately 400 were put in Lake Ontario in Cobourg and another 500 will be put in the lake in Newcastle.
