UPDATE – Driver Charged After School Bus Rolls Over In Municipality of Port Hope

Driver Charged after School Bus Collision

On Friday April 12, 2019 at approximately 8:30 am officers from the Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) along with emergency personnel attended Cold Springs Camp Road north of the Town of Port Hope for reports of single vehicle collision involving a school bus with students on board.

The school bus carrying 8 students at the time was travelling north bound, lost control, crossed over the south bound lane and landed on its side in the west side ditch. The driver and two children aged 9 & 11 years were transported to a local area hospital with minor injuries and have since been released.

The 48 year-old female driver from Curtis, Ontario has been charged with offences under the Highway Traffic Act including careless driving, fail to properly wear seatbelt and fail to ensure vehicle inspection report is accurately completed.

A school bus with eight students on board flipped over down a hill on April 12, 2019 in the municipality of Port Hope.
The bus was heading north on Cold Springs Camp Road approximately one kilometre from Ganaraska Road when it went into the west ditch and flipped on its side down an embankment at approximately 8:30 a.m.
The bus had eight children elementary school children on board, mostly from younger grades.
Port Hope Fire and Emergency Services along with Northumberland County Paramedics, Durham Paramedics and Northumberland OPP arrived on scene to quickly assess the children and bus driver.
Two of the children were walked to the ambulance and were transported to hospital with very minor injuries.
“It’s frightening at the beginning, but once we got reassured that everyone was ok, that’s the important thing,” said a grandmother who was picking up her granddaughter who is in grade two.
Rushing to the scene the woman said she was relieved she wasn’t hurt, but the child’s first words were, “Mama look at my bus.”
Some parents came to the scene to pick up their children, and others were transported to school when another bus came to pick them up.
There is no cause of the accident at this time.
