Cobourg Launches Survey Seeking Residents Opinions on Retail Cannabis Outlets

The Town of Cobourg is seeking input from residents ahead of the upcoming decision to opt-out of allowing recreational cannabis stores to operate within municipal limits.
Across Canada it is now legal to purchase and use cannabis for recreational purposes. In Ontario, the only way to legally purchase recreational cannabis is online through the Ontario Cannabis Store. However, the provincial government is giving Ontario’s 444 municipalities a one-time opportunity to opt-out of hosting retail cannabis outlets in their communities by January 22, 2019. Otherwise retail cannabis outlets will be allowed to operate beginning in April 2019. Councils that opt-out of private sales can opt-back in at a later date.
By January 22, 2019, the Town of Cobourg must confirm with the province whether it will allow private retail stores. The Town of Cobourg is seeking input from residents to help Council make this important decision.
Engage Cobourg – Your Voice, Your Town The Town of Cobourg’s Communications Department has put together a strategic communications and engagement plan committed to engaging and informing Cobourg residents on decisions that impact their lives. Residents are encouraged to visit the Town’s Cannabis Retail Plan webpage where information on the legalization of cannabis will be updated regularly.
Below you’ll find all the engagement opportunities being offered to residents including the Town of Cobourg Cannabis Survey.

The Cannabis Retail Survey Should the Town of Cobourg opt-out of having retail cannabis stores operating in Cobourg?

To participate in the survey please visit the Town of Cobourg’s website at http://www.cobourg.ca. The deadline to complete the survey and provide input is January 2, 2019.
The results of the survey will not determine whether council ultimately decides to opt-out of recreational cannabis sales, but will be included in a staff report for council’s consideration when it makes its decision at one of its first meetings of the next term.
