The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry is helping re-introduce bloaters (Deepwater Cisco Fish – Lake Herring) to Lake Ontario.
The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry ship, Ontario Explorer (which helps manage lake Ontario’s fish population) met trucks filled with fish from the Harwood Fish Culture Station along with Chatsworth Fish Culture Station (near Owen Sound).
Over 15,000 fish were transported to the Ontario Explorer where they were then taken out near the middle of Lake Ontario.
Trucks are expected to be back daily for the week to re-stock over 100,000 fish into the lake.
The MNR is working with the US to introduce this species back into our lake as adults for the end of November which is the spawning season.
Town of Cobourg staff were welcomed to view workers transferring the fish.
