Elevator Cause Of Smoke In Upper Floors Of Apartment Building In Cobourg
Cobourg Fire Department responded to a possible structure fire at 360 Westwood Drive at approximately 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, August 26, 2018.
Crews arrived to find a number of people outside, but there were also people still making their way out of the building.
Captain Chris Brown said there was smoke in the hallways of the fourth and fifth floors of the five storey building. Fire crews with breathing apparatus and high rise kits determined the cause of the smoke was coming from the elevator room at the top of the apartment building on the corner of Westwood Drive and Burnham Street..
“One of our concerns was where the elevator was so it took some time to locate the elevator and open it because it was obviously stopped.”
No one was inside the elevator and the smoke was cleared from the upper floors.
The cause of the smoke appears to be from the elevator motor.
There is one elevator for the building which will be out of service until it can be repaired.
