It was a special day on the last day of school for a number of children from Northumberland Big Brothers Big Sisters.
McCracken Towing and Auto worked with Big Brothers Big Sisters to pick out 10 children to have brand new bicycles for the summer on June 28, 2018.
The children aged six to 12-years-old met at McCracken Towing And Auto and with approximately 10 employees who stayed after work to build the bicycles and watch the children ride them for the first time.
Traditional Mentoring Caseworker for Northumberland Big Brothers Big Sisters Cindy Peters said it was a special day.
“All these kids don’t have a bike, so they were pretty excited.”
“It’s something pretty special for their kids and their families.”
With the excitement of the last day of school, some of the families held back on telling their children about the surprise.
“One child who came a little late, his mom barely got the car stopped and he jumped out.”
Peter’s said it’s amazing to have special people like Greg McCracken in the community.
“It’s amazing. When they called us, we couldn’t believe it. Ten bikes is a lot and we were excited for our families.”
After the bikes were built employees would help each child pick out a bicycle and make sure there was air in the tires before trying them out for the first time.
Heather Schut who works at McCracken’s Towing and Auto said it’s the second time the company has given to Northumberland Big Brothers Big Sisters.
“We do it to try and help out everyone in the community and put a smile on a child’s face to start the summer.”.
McCracken’s would also like to thank Sommerville’s Sporting Goods in downtown Cobourg for the incredible help they offered with the surprise for the children.
To cap the afternoon off, a barbeque was held to help kick off the end of the school year and let the summer begin.
