We all depend on and appreciate the work of our doctors.
Today, May 1, has been proclaimed Doctors’ Day by Northumberland Hills Hospital (in conjunction with the Northumberland West Community Physician Recruitment and Retention Committee and the Ontario Medical Association).
The press release from NHH states that more than 335,000 Ontario patients are treated and cared for by a doctor each day, whether in a hospital setting, a family-practice clinic, a long-term-care home or in one’s own home.
“Ontario doctors are making a positive differnce in the lives of patients by providing high-quality care when it’s needed most,” the bulletin said.
Doctors’ Day was officially proclaimed by the province in 2011 to celebrate Ontario’s 26,000-plus physicians and to mark the birethday of Dr, Emily Stowe, Canada’s first female physician.
Through April 4, local patients and their families are encouraged to sign one of the thank-you cards that the Physician Recruitment and Retention Committee has placed in their doctors’ offices and in the hospital. Or, if you get the chance, say thank-you directly to your doctor.
Local residents are also invited to share stories of their own defining moments with their doctors via social media as part of the OMA series called Defining Moments that will run throughout the month across their social channels. Tweet your own story usig the hastags #LoveMyMD and #DefiningMoment, or share a story on the OMA Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ontariodoctors.
NHH president and chief executive officer Linda Davis expressed her own thanks in the press release.
“We are extremely fortunate to have such a strong and active community of physicians in west Northumberland,” Davis said.
“On behalf of the physician recruitment committee and the residents of west Northumberland, we would like to thank you for all your hard work and dedication,” committee chair Gerald Blackstock added.
“We know that all of you go above and beyond on a daily basis. and we appreciate your commitment to health care in our community.”
