Cobourg Will Lose One Downtown Parking Lot

As of Nov. 14, Cobourg’s downtown will have one fewer parking lot, as the space at 202 Second St. (across from the Market Building) will close.
Cobourg council heard the details at Wednesday’s meeting from Legislative Clerk Brent Larmer, who explained that the town has held a lease on that property for years with its various owners to rent the property to provide parking. Its current owner, Balder Corporation, has requested an increase in rental fees for this space.
The town responded with a counter-offer, which Larmer said was rejected.
Councillor Brian Darling asked if Balder Corporation itself could run a parking lot on the site.
Director of Development Services Chris Challenger said yes but with requirements – a pre-consultation meeting with the town, presentation of a proposed lay-out and being subject to site plan control among them.
Mayor Lucas Cleveland asked for confirmation that Balder is the same proponent that is taking the town to the Ontario Land Tribunal in order to move ahead on their eight-storey development proposal. Challenger provided confirmation.
