Northumberland OPP – Traffic Stop and Collision Leads to Charges (Names Released)

Members of the Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have laid charges in a number of unrelated incidents recently.

Collision
On August 12, 2026, at approximately 9:10 p.m., police and the fire department responded to a single-vehicle collision on Highway 401 westbound in the Municipality of Port Hope.

Officers arrived at the scene where a pickup truck had collided with a guardrail. No serious injuries were reported.

After speaking with the driver, officers initiated an impaired driving investigation. As a result, the individual was taken into custody and transported to a local detachment for further testing.

Paul HUGHES (54) from Po rt Hope has been charged with:

Operation while impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)

Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs

The accused is due to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg in September.

A 90-day Administrative Driver’s License Suspension (ADLS) and a seven-day vehicle impoundment were also imposed.

Prohibited Operation
On August 12, 2026, at approximately 2:20 a.m., an officer conducting traffic enforcement on Ontario Street in the Municipality of Brighton stopped a vehicle.

During the inv estigation, the driver was found to be prohibited from operating a motor vehicle.

As a result, John EHRET (52) of Brighton, has been charged with:

Operation while prohibited

The accused is due to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg in October.

The vehicle was impounded for 45 days.
