On July 12, 2026, at approximately 6:30 p.m., the Port Hope Police Service responded to a report of a male who had allegedly been observed consuming alcohol before driving away in a blue Hyundai.
A Port Hope Police officer located the vehicle and attempted to conduct a traffic stop to begin an impaired driving investigation. The driver failed to stop, accelerated away at a high rate of speed and entered Highway 401 eastbound.
Police subsequently received several reports from members of the public regarding the vehicle being driven dangerously on Highway 401, including travelling at high rates of speed and passing vehicles on both shoulders of the highway.
At approximately 6:50 p.m., the vehicle was involved in a multi-vehicle collision on Highway 401 near Big Apple Drive. The driver and passenger fled the collision scene on foot into a wooded area.
Members of the Ontario Provincial Police Emergency Response Team, Canine Unit and Remotely Piloted Aircraft System Unit assisted in locating both individuals.
As a result of the investigation, Port Hope Police officers assisted with evidence gathering and provided investigative information to the Ontario Provincial Police, which assisted in the identification and arrest of 41-year-old Tyler LAZURE who was charged by OPP with the following:
Flight from Peace Officer
Dangerous Operation, Operation While Impaired
Operation While Impaired – Blood Alcohol Concentration 80 Plus
Fail to Comply with Probation Order
Fail to Remain
Drive While Suspended
LAZURE was held for a bail hearing before the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg.
