SIU Investigating Highway 401 Collision Between Civilian Vehicle and Police Cruiser in Pickering

The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the serious injury suffered by a 52-year-old man today in Pickering.

Preliminary information suggests the following:
On April 26, 2026, OPP officers were investigating a fatal motor vehicle collision that had occurred on eastbound Highway 401 in Pickering. The Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) provided traffic support.

On eastbound Highway 401, a cruiser was stationed in the inside left lane and an MTO support truck was next to it in the centre lane. Behind these vehicles, road barricades were set up at an angle to divert eastbound traffic off the highway and onto Brock Road.

At approximately 4:30 a.m., an eastbound vehicle drove through the barricades and struck the rear of the cruiser.

The driver of the civilian vehicle, and two officers from the cruiser, were transported to hospital for treatment. The driver of the vehicle was diagnosed with a serious injury. The two officers were released from hospital with minor injuries.

Two investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case.

The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation, including video or photos, to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529.
