Peterborough County OPP – Vehicle Breaks Through the Ice on Cordova Lake

Members of the Peterborough County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a call New Years Eve regarding a vehicle that was stuck on the ice on Cordova Lake.

At approximately 7:15pm, on Wednesday December 31, 2025, the Peterborough County OPP received a call regarding a vehicle that had gone on to the ice and was unable to get back off. The caller advised that they were traveling to a friend’s residence and due to weather conditions turned the wrong direction taking their vehicle inadvertently out on to the ice. The driver made attempts to turn around once they realized what happened but was unable to gain any traction. The driver eventually abandoned the vehicle and walked to the residence where they made attempts to contact a tow and notified police.

The vehicle owner was able to contact a towing company and upon returning to where the vehicle was left, discovered that it had broken through the ice. The location of the hole in the ice was marked for safety reasons, and the Ministry of Environment (MOE) was contacted. No one was hurt as a result of the vehicle breaking through the ice.

The vehicle has since been removed from the lake.

The OPP want to remind you that No Ice is Safe Ice. Always be cautious of your surroundings when out on the ice and look for potential hazards like pressure cracks or open water. If you’re not sure of the condition of the ice, don’t go on it.

To serve our province by protecting its citizens, upholding the law and preserving public safety.
