Belleville Police – Incidents Include Shoplifting, Counterfeit Bills, Break and Enter with Firearms (Names Released)

Total calls for service – Belleville Police responded to 87 calls for service over a 24-hour period beginning at 5:00 am on June 3, 2025 to 5:00 am on June 4, 2025.

Shoplifting
On the 3rd of June 2025, Belleville Police responded to a shoplifting call at a north end business.

Officers arrived and were able to positively identify the suspect who had already fled after stealing approximately $100 worth of merchandise.

Officer actively looked for the suspect and arrested the male shortly after 9pm in the downtown area.

Justin Minaker, 37-years-old of Belleville was charged with theft under $5000 and released on an Undertaking with conditions and court date in July.

Counterfeit $20 Bills Alert
The Belleville Police Service would like to raise awareness to local business owners and community residents regarding Counterfeit Canadian $20 bills circulating. Between May 26th and June 2nd 2025 Belleville Police have taken at least 3 reports of counterfeit bills.

All of the bills were clean and crisp with a hologram sticker that appears to have been put on after the bill was printed.

Additionally, it is believed that the same serial number will be on all of the bills.

Approximately $1000 worth of counterfeit bills have been recovered in 3 separate incidents.

 

Break and Enter with a firearm leads to multiple charges against a Quinte West man
On the 30th of May at 2:30pm, Belleville Police responded to a residence in the city’s west end regarding an unwanted man who had entered a residence while in possession of a handgun.

Police quickly responded to the area.

The suspect hearing the sirens, fled the residence on foot. Police obtained a detailed description of the male and a direction of travel.

Containment was set up while police searched for the suspect. Police located the suspect a short distance away and arrested him without incident.

At the time of the arrest, the male was not in possession of the handgun.

Believing that the suspect had discarded the gun while running from the residence, Belleville Police K9 “Bax” was brought in to assist in the search for the firearm.

A 9mm pistol was located in a backyard in a bush.

The subsequent police investigation led to the following charges against 33-year-old Kyle Labarge of Quinte West:

1. Break and enter with intent to commit an indictable offence

2. Possess firearm contrary to a Prohibition Order

3. Tampering with a serial number on a firearm

4. Pointing a firearm

5. Knowledge of unauthorized possession of a firearm

6. Unauthorized possession of a firearm

7. Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose

8. Careless use of a firearm

9. Firearm – use while committing an offence

Labarge was held for a bail hearing.
