GRCA – Spring Storm Will Bring Rain and Possibly Snow and Freezing Rain
The Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority advises that a long duration spring storm will bring rain and possibly snow or freezing rain over the weekend and into Monday.
Precipitation will begin on Friday evening as freezing rain or snow before switching over to rain by Saturday morning.
The remainder of the weekend will experience rain with the possibility of freezing rain while temperatures are below freezing. Total precipitation of 30 to 50 mm is expected by Monday.
Ground conditions are saturated and surfaces may become coated in ice which will lead to rapid runoff when it rains.
Also, any remaining snow has become dense and will contribute to runoff amounts as the melting continues.
Wetlands are generally full and do not have the capacity to accept much additional runoff.
Streamflows have been slowly declining over the past week and are near seasonal levels.
While no flooding is anticipated, higher than normal water levels and flows will occur in local streams.
In addition, slippery stream banks and fast flowing, cold water will create hazardous conditions.
Please exercise caution around all water bodies and alert any children in your care of these hazards.
This Watershed Conditions Statement will be in effect until the end of day, Monday, March 31st, 2025.
Conservation Authority staff will continue to monitor watershed conditions and provide updates as necessary.
