Keep St. George’s In Mind for Your Shrove Tuesday Meal

If it’s Shrove Tuesday, it’s time for pancakes – and St. George’s Anglican Church in Grafton hopes to be your choice for this annual tradition on March 4.

Habitat For Humanity Northumberland joins them in that hope, as the St. George’s Pancake Brunch will be the third annual one in support of their organization and its mission of affordable home ownership.

The idea came from the church’s Social Justice Committee – admission to the pancake brunch by donation, with the proceeds donated to a group that they have long supported by providing catering on Habitat builds (along with the church’s men’s group, who cook up delicious and affordable Friday breakfasts), both through donations and actual hands-on support.

And the results over the first two years has been literally thousands of dollars for Habitat.

Habitat Chief Executive Officer Cathy Borowec confirmed that proceeds the first year surpassed $2,000. Community and Fund Development Co-ordinator Melissa Morrison reported last year that the community showed their support to the tune of $2,833.

“We all had a fantastic time, and truly appreciate the support of our friends at the church,” Morrison said.

The cooks estimated that 80 to 100 showed up to enjoy pancakes, sausages, fruit cocktail and homemade goodies. And by the door, those departing were offered a take-home gift from a tray of fudge and a large vase with several dozen roses.

Habitat representatives were on hand, of course, with special donation envelopes for those who wanted tax-deductible receipts for their gifts. And just to showcase the kind of work they would be supporting, there was a gingerbread scale model of what will soon be their completed seven-unit townhouse development in Baltimore, complete with parking spaces and rooftop solar panels. The artist was also present – Gary Ruffello, winner of Habitat’s ninth annual Gingerbread Festival in the professional division.

The St. George’s third annual Pancake Brunch takes place March 4 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. – a brunch, as opposed to a supper, Social Justice Committee member Sharon O’Connor explained, so no one has to drive in the dark.

The church is located at 10792 County Rd. 2 in Grafton.
