The opening ceremonies for the Men’s and Women’s Ontario Curling Championships were held at the Cobourg Community Centre on Monday, January 20, 2025.
Piper, Mary Ito from the Cobourg Legion Pipes and Drums started off the opening ceremonies at 6 p.m. by piping in the teams.
Today’s Northumberland spoke with Curling Ontario Board Chair, Tim McChesney about Cobourg and the West Northumberland Curling Club hosting the event for the second time.
“They do a terrific job. Everybody has been so gracious, so helpful – we’ve had nothing but smooth sailing from the moment we started.”
One of the keys to the success of the event is the “army” of volunteers.
“From the small details to the bigger issues – they’ve been a real joy to work with.”
McChesney said that Canada always has good provincial teams with the best playing in Cobourg this week.
“We’ve got the best of the best. We’ve got a really nice slate of young players as well as some veterans so the future looks bright.”
Curling Ontario which is celebrating their 150th year and with the calibre of teams in Cobourg throughout the week McChesney said, “we are really excited about having someone come out of this, that’s going to give a real good run at the Scotties (Tournament of Hearts) and the Brier.”
