Northumberland OPP – Long Weekend Yields Speeding Drivers

The Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) took part in ‘Operation Impact’ over the Thanksgiving long weekend.

The initiative ran from Friday, October 11, until Monday, October 14, 2024, and officers focused on the “Big 4”, which includes seatbelt compliance, distracted driving, speeding and impaired driving.

Northumberland OPP is able to provide the following details in regarding to speeding offences:

– Speeding 1- 49 Km/h over posted limit – 111 charges

In addition to the above, officers charged two drivers for stunt driving.

On October 14, 2024, at approximately 2:20 p.m., police were conducting speed enforcement on Highway 401 westbound in the Township of Hamilton when they observed a passenger vehicle travelling at a speed of 157 Km/h in a posted 100 km/h limit. The vehicle was stopped and a 20-year-old driver from Belleville was char ged with:

– Drive motor vehicle – perform stunt – excessive speed

On October 14, 2024, at approximately 10:50 pm., officers observed a pick-up truck travelling at 160 Km/h in a posted 110 Km/h limit on Highway 401 eastbound in the Township of Cramahe. The vehicle was stopped and a 27-year-old, from Wilsonville, has been charged with:

– Drive motor vehicle – perform stunt – excessive speed

– Drive motor vehicle, no currently validated permit.

Both individuals had their licence suspended for 30 days and vehicle impounded for 14 days.

There were no drivers charged with impaired driving this weekend along with a low number of persons charged with seatbelt and hand-held communication device offences. Northumberland OPP would like to take this opportunity to thank the public for their compliance in these areas as we work together to keep our r oads safe.
