Port Hope Earns Positive Ranking in 2023 Crime Severity Index
The Municipality of Port Hope has once again been recognized for its safety, ranking favourably in the 2023 Crime Severity Index (CSI) report released by the Canadian Centre for Justice and Community Safety Statistics.
The Crime Severity Index (CSI) is a measure that reflects the seriousness of police-reported crimes.
Unlike traditional crime rates, the CSI takes into account both the number of reported incidents and their relative severity, providing a comprehensive look at crime trends in Canadian communities. First introduced in 2009, the index was developed to address the limitations of traditional crime measurement methods. It is complementary to the crime rate which measures only the volume of crime reported to the police per 100,000 population.
The Index includes all Criminal Code violations including traffic, as well as drug violations and all Federal Statutes and is applicable to those municipalities that operate their own municipal police service.
Port Hope’s urban area, served by the Port Hope Police Service, achieved a Crime Severity Index score of 25.73, which includes both violent and non-violent crime. This places Port Hope 44th out of 45 in ranked areas for Overall Crime Severity in Ontario, reaffirming Port Hope’s standing as one of the safest communities in the province.
