Peterborough County OPP – Overdue Rental Recovered After Theft of Gas (Name Released)

On January 22,2024, a report of a theft of gas resulted in the return of an overdue rental vehicle.

On January 22, 2024, the Peterborough County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a call from a business owner in Selwyn Township reporting that a vehicle had pulled into their gas station, the driver filled up with nearly $115 worth of fuel and then left without making any effort to pay. The complainant also advised that they were aware that the vehicle, a rental truck, had been reported as overdue by an affiliate business a few days earlier.

Police were able to confirm the identity of the individual who had rented the vehicle and were able to match that person to the individual seen on surveillance video from the gas station. Officers contacted the individual who was later arrested by police. The rental vehicle was returned to the rental company.

Justin MCCASKIE (age 19) of Peterborough, ON., was arrested and charged with:

·      Theft under $5000

·      Driving while under suspension

The accused is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Peterborough on February 27, 2024.
