Peterborough County OPP – Two Vehicles Towed for Racing
Two drivers were charged with Stunt Driving after being caught racing on Highway 7.
On December 14, 2023, a short while after midnight, a member of the Peterborough County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was observing traffic as it passed through the intersection of Highway 7 and Highway 28 in the township of Otonabee-South Monaghan. The officer observed two newer model vehicles that were travelling westbound, come to a stop at the red light. The vehicles were positioned side by side and as the light changed, both accelerated at a high rate of speed. The officer activated the emergency lighting on the OPP cruiser in an effort to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicles. Another OPP officer was situated further west of the location conducting speed enforcement. The officer was able to obtain a speed reading of both vehicles of 148km per hour in an 80km per hour zone.
Officers were able to safely conduct a traffic stop on both vehicles. The drivers, a 17-year-old from North York and an 18-year-old from North York, were both charged with Perform Stunt – Excessive Speed as well as Race Motor Vehicle on a Highway. Both drivers received a 30-day licence suspension and a future court date and both vehicles have been impounded for 14 days.

Speeding is an aggressive driving beha viour and continues to be a major contributing factor in motor vehicle collisions, fatalities, and injuries on Ontario roads. Drivers and members of the public are reminded to respect our communities, comply with all laws and not jeopardize the safety of our citizens or our neighbourhoods with risky, illegal and dangerous actions.
