Cobourg Police Service CCTV Camera Update
The Cobourg Police Service has installed two CCTV cameras in east-end neighbourhoods. The CPS CCTV network continues to be a priority for the Cobourg Police Service.
Most recently, two CCTV cameras were installed in Cobourg, one at the intersection of Brook Road North and King Street East and one on Meredith Avenue.
The CPS Organizational Development and Crime Analytics Department initiated the installation after reviewing feedback from the community canvass conducted in east-end neighbourhoods on November 11 th , 2023. When residents were asked what they would like to see done to address their concerns, one of the top responses was the implementation of CCTV cameras in and around the neighbourhood. These cameras are integrated within the existing CCTV mesh network designed to scale and respond effectively in deterring crime and supporting investigators.
About the CPS CCTV Camera Network
Funded through the Ontario CCTV Grant Program, the CPS CCTV camera network is undergoing significant expansion, with 28 operational cameras and plans to almost double within the next year. The comprehensive installation of the next phase of CPS cameras is scheduled for completion by the end of summer 2024.
This augmented capacity aims to expedite the identification of individuals involved in incidents, facilitate evidence collection, and bolster court prosecutions.
In strict adherence to provincial policies governing installation, signage, and data usage, the initiative not only enhances investigative capabilities but also serves as a unique testbed for the V13 Policetech Accelerator, fostering the validation of technologies to advance community safety.
As the project progresses, CPS will be launching its community-wide camera registry, where residents and companies can register their cameras with CPS so that in the event of an incident, CPS can rapidly request footage from participants in this program. This will further expedite post-event footage access, leading to faster response times and more efficient clearance rates.
The CPS CCTV camera network continues to be funded by the Ontario CCTV Grant Program.
