Northumberland OPP – Thirteen-Year-Old Charged with Theft of Motor Vehicle
(MUNICIPALITY OF TRENT HILLS, ON) – On November 6, 2023, at approximately 8:30 p.m., the Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a call from a grandmother concerned for the wellbeing of her grandchild. The caller reported that her grandchild had left the residence upset and wanted the police to locate them. The grandchild is a 13-year-old youth.
Northumberland OPP members patrolled the area observing an individual matching the description of the youth driving a motor vehicle. After seeing police, the youth fled in the vehicle at a high rate of speed. The vehicle and the youth were later located.
As a result of the investigation, the 13-year-old, who cannot be named due to the provisions under the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA), was arrested and charged with the following:
- Break, enter a p lace – commit indictable offence
- Theft of a motor vehicle
- Flight from a police officer
- Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000
