Syd Chatwood Honoured with Memorial Scholarship

By Cecilia Nasmith/Today’s Northumberland
A new $1,000 scholarship in honour of Syd Chatwood is seen by Beyond the Blue Box as a wonderful way to express their dedication to inclusivity, including those with developmental disabilities.

The news was announced June 25 at a gathering of Syd’s best friends at the Cobourg reuse-and-recycle story on Covert Street. He had been a valued and beloved volunteer at the story until his sudden death in January at age 32. The store closed for several days, not only out of respect, but because everyone was so shaken.

Executive Director Jane Hawthorne said at the time that a gathering in his honour would be held later in the year, and June 25 was the day. They closed the store in his honour again, and welcomed about 150 to remember and share their favourite stories – and among those attending was Molly, his favourite dog.

“It couldn’t have been more perfect,” Hawthorne said.

And topping it all off was the announcement of the scholarship.

The Beyond the Blue Box website noted that Syd promoted diversity, equity and inclusiveness for all, and they were proud to announce a scholarship in his memory that represented his approach to life.

It will be handed out Oct. 15, which is Sid’s birthday, Hawthorne said.
