The Clarington Eagles completed a four-game sweep over the Port Hope Panthers in the Provincial Junior Hockey League Eastern Conference final with a 5-1 victory Wednesday night at the Jack Burger Sports Complex.

Leading just 1-0 after the period and 2-0 after two, the Eagles tacked on three more goals in the third. Drew Clapperton tallied the lone goal for Port Hope with Isaac Langdon and Connor MacGregor drawing assists.

After the game, Panthers head coach John Foley said his message to the players was they had a lot to be proud of in turning their season around from being in fifth place in December in the six-team Tod Division and going on to capture the division title before a tough match-up in the Eastern Conference final against the Eagles.

“Clarington’s a very good hockey team. We were right there with them for the first couple games – I thought our boys played really well – and the message was to hold your heads up high,” Foley said. “This is a learning curve. We’ve got some young guys in here that are going to be huge factors for us next year and we want to make sure that what they learned this year carries on to next year.”

Clarington will now represent the Eastern Conference in the Schmalz Cup tournament in May.

This Sunday is the deadline to register for the upcoming Cobourg Legion Minor Softball season.
