Cobourg Police – Castleton Man Facing A Number of Charges (Name Released)

A Castleton man charged with drug trafficking after police investigate suspicious activity.

On Wednesday, March 8, 2023, at 11:10 p.m., police on general patrol in the area of Division Street and University Street observed three people approaching a parked vehicle with the alarm sounding.

Police commenced an investigation, during which the individuals fled. After a short foot pursuit, one individual was arrested without incident. Police continue the investigation into the other two individuals.

During the arrest, police located a prohibited knife and illegal drugs with an estimated street value of $7,200.

Through further investigation, police learned the man was bound by a court order prohibiting the possession of weapons.

Police seized approximately:

• 0.4 grams of fentanyl

• 69.7 grams of cocaine

• 8 tablets of Buprenorphine Hydrochloride

As a result, Phillip Simpson (34) of Castleton was charged with the following offences:

1. Obstruct Peace Officer contrary to Section 129(a) of the Criminal Code of Canada (CCC)

2. Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking Schedule 1 Substance, Fentanyl, contrary to Section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA)

3. Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking Schedule 1 Substance, Cocaine, contrary to Section 5(2) CDSA

4. Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking Schedule 1 Substance, Buprenorphine Hydrochloride, contrary to Section 5(2) CDSA

5. Possession of a Prohibited Weapon contrary to Section 92(2)CCC

6. Possession of a Prohibited Weapon contrary to Section 117.01(1) CCC

That accused was held for a bail hearing later today.
