Cobourg Police – Assault with Weapon, Possession of the Purpose of Trafficking (Name Released)

Cobourg man facing drug trafficking charges after police respond to report of bear mace incident.

On Thursday, November 24, 2022, at 6:40 a.m., police were called to a residence on King Street East for a report that a man had sprayed an individual with bear mace. Police located the person who had been sprayed and administered first aid until they were transported to the hospital by paramedics with minor injuries.

As a result of the police investigation, Charlie Butler (37) of Cobourg was arrested. During the arrest, police located methamphetamine, fentanyl, and over $700 in Canadian currency. The estimated street value of the seized drugs is over $6,400. He was charged with the following offences:

1. Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose contrary to section 88 of the Criminal Code

2. Assault with a Weapon contrary to section 267(a) of the Criminal Code

3. Administering Noxious Substance contrary to section 245 of the Criminal Code

4. Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking Schedule 1 Substance –Methamphetamine contrary to section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act

5. Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking Schedule 1 Substance – Fentanyl contrary to section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act

6. Possession of Proceeds Obtained by Crime Under $5,000 contrary to section 354(1)(a) of the Criminal Code

7. Carry Concealed Weapon contrary to section 90 of the Criminal Code

The accused was held for a show cause hearing scheduled for November 25, 2022.
