Pickleball Catching on Fast in Cobourg

With 130 members, the Cobourg Pickleball Club (CPC) is growing fast.

Along with that, members are hoping they’ll soon have courts for themselves.

Brighton just recently unveiled a number of courts specifically designed for pickleball and Cobourg is hoping for the same.

Today’s Northumberland spoke recently with Audrey Woolsey is the Recording Secretary and Membership Coordinator for Cobourg Pickleball Club.

“We’re hoping to get three designated courts just for pickleball.”

The club is hoping to receive grant money and also support from Cobourg to build up to nine courts.

“We’re hoping it will encourage youth and all other ages to participate in the sport.”

Woolsey was introduced to the sport four years ago and loves it.

“I just came out and tried it one time and I really liked it. It seems once you try it you just don’t go back. People just get caught up in the game and they just love it.”

Woolsey said it’s a bit easier than tennis which helps the joints as you get older.

“Most of our players are recreational players and they love the social aspect. They have courts they can come to that they don’t have to drive relatively far.”

Another bonus is the equipment is inexpensive.

The CPC share the Coverdale Courts with the Cobourg Tennis Club with both Club’s renting time slots off the Town of Cobourg who owns them.

The pickleball courts are still in the planning stages where they will be installed, but Woolsey said there are talks about having them either at the Cobourg Community Centre or Sinclair Park.
