Cobourg Kicks Off Pride Month

Celebrating Pride Month Cobourg June 1, 2022

Pride Month was celebrated with two ceremonies in downtown Cobourg on Wednesday, June 1, 2022.

The first event took place at 11:30 a.m. in front of Victoria Hall the Town of Cobourg and the Cobourg Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Committee held a flag-raising ceremony at Victoria Hall to kick off Pride Month.

Communities across the country celebrate Pride Month each June as a way of recognizing the influence 2SLGBTQ+ people have had around the world, as well as an opportunity raise awareness and continue to advocate for equity and representation for all.

With the formation of the EDI Committee in 2021, it was the first time the Town of Cobourg has observed the occasion by hosting a formal flag-raising ceremony.

It was also the first time the Town of Cobourg hosted a formal Pride flag raising ceremony at Victoria Hall.

A short time after the ceremony in front of Victoria Hall, PFLAG Cobourg-Port Hope joined the Cobourg Police Service raising the Pride flag at the police station on King Street West which was
followed by a community barbecue until 2 p.m. Donations supporting PFLAG Cobourg-Port Hope were appreciated.

The Ukrainian flag was be temporarily removed from the Town of Cobourg flagpole at King Street and Second Street. Following Pride Month, the town will once again fly this flag as symbol of solidarity with the people of Ukraine
