Cobourg Upgrades to “Pay and Display” Parking in the Downtown Area

The Town of Cobourg’s Public Works Division would like to inform residents and visitors of upcoming changes to the paid parking in the downtown area.

The Public Works Division will begin removing the existing parking meters on Thursday, August 12, 2021 with the exception of the accessible parking meters. The new ‘Pay-and-Display’ machines that were installed last week will begin operation at the following locations:

• King Street West between Spring Street and Division Street (north and south sides)

• King Street East between Division and McGill St (north and south sides)

• Third Street, south of Albert Street (east side)

Why are the Parking Meters being Replaced?
The existing coin-operated parking meters along King Street are aging and require a lot of maintenance and staff time to empty, sort and count the coins. During the summer season the parking meters fill up at a quicker rate than they can be emptied by staff, which can take up to four hours to empty. By switching to Pay-and-Display machines, the Town will be able to:

• Reduce risk of vandalism, theft of fares, damage and snow removal costs.

• Ease staff time and resources required to empty the machines.

• Minimize maintenance requirements and costs.

• Modernize payment methods by offering a credit card option.

• Have replacement parts readily available to make repairs.

• Improve aesthetic for the downtown area by reducing the number of machines.

The parking rate for the downtown area will remain at $1/hour, Monday to Sunday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. (including weekends and holidays). Residents and visitors can pay via cash or with credit card at the new Pay-and-Display machines or continue to using the HonkMobile app to pay for parking from any phone, tablet or computer with internet access.
