Editorial – Inspirational Friends Volunteer Their Time To Make Northumberland A Cleaner Place
In one word it was “inspirational.”
Four co-workers out on their day off cleaning a road in Hamilton Township.
Lorna Dickson, Pat Davis, Sylvia Fuller, Chris Clarke spent Monday cleaning the north and south ditches of Telephone Road between Theatre Road and Hamilton Road.
It was Dickson’s idea after she read a post from students riding a bus how much garbage there was along the roadway.
It seems whatever free time Dickson has she is cleaning up garbage along the on and off-ramps of the Highway of Heroes along with doing her best to keep the Wesleyville on-ramp clean.
These four volunteers don’t live anywhere near where they spent the day on Monday, but they did the back-breaking work bending over and picking up everything you can imagine including alcohol containers which Dickson turns in to the Beer Store and donates the money collected to charity.
All four friends either work or have retired from CPK Interior Products in Port Hope.
Given the ages range from 60-years-old to 73-years-old they are all truly inspirational people.
On Monday, many people driving by honked their horns, or stopped to say a simple “thank-you” to the group.
Even Hamilton Township Mayor Bill Cane dropped by to offer his thanks on a job well done to the men and women.
Seeing the piles of garbage that people toss so freely on our beautiful country is nothing less than infuriating. But in that same breath, it’s people like Lorna, Pat, Syliva and Chris and many others in our community who may go for a daily walk and pick up discarded trash that helps make Northumberland County, Ontario and Canada a beautiful place to live.
